How To Have Movie Night Step By Step Guide – Family, Friends, & Dates

How To Have Movie Night Step By Step Guide - Family, Friends, & Dates

Movie night is a nationwide term used for simply saying you’re staying in for the night and you’re just going to watch a few movies with or without company.

I’ll give you a step by step guide on how to throw the best movie night get together you can possibly do.

How To Have Movie Night Step By Step Guide – Family, Friends, & Dates

This is not a hard ordeal to have and can be quite entertaining. Never feel like you don’t have the right this or enough that. After reading this thoroughly you will be a movie night expert.

Movie Night Movies Can Be Used Or New

When you’re hosting your movie night. The movies that are being viewed that night can be used or new. There isn’t anything wrong with either. Just go for whatever works best for you and your guests.

Me personally have always watched movies I have here at the house. So used is my choice and has been working fine for me for years. I don’t think I’ve ever gone out and purchased movies for movie night.

What Snacks To Buy For Movie Night

You want to buy snacks. I say snacks because you can snack on a handful of peanuts or candy and still be up to watch the movie. But if you eat a steak or chicken pasta you might not make it past the intro.

When you host a movie night event you want to know your company. Know enough about them to be able and go out and buy snacks that won’t get wasted.

Buy small things. Remember you want to keep your visitors/company awake to watch the movie with you. So things like candy, nachos, popcorn, juice, soft drinks etc.

Limit the consumable amount at least till you all get halfway through the movie. By that time you and your company have an idea for what the main objective for the movie is and no one should be left out or lost as to what is going on.

What Movie/Movies To Watch On Movie Night

What Movie/Movies To Watch On Movie Night

This will all depend on your guests and what you and they like as far as movies go.

Let’s say you’re having a movie night for you and your college buddies at your place.

You know these people pretty well and you’ve watched things with them before so your more comfortable to watch pretty much whatever with them.

Yall agree to have a comedy movie night. Ideally, the host of the event will supply all of the movies being shown. But in this situation, I would ask each individual to bring their own personal favorite.

Its comedy its all funny and it just doesn’t get any better than that in my opinion.

Now for any other genre of movie, I would highly suggest the host to supply all the movies to be shown. Unless you like the idea of everyone bringing their own movie. Either way is fine its just one way is considered the traditional way and the other isn’t.

Movie Night Ideas For Friends and Family

Movie Night Ideas For Friends and Family

You can be less uptight around your family and friends than you would in front of a lover or someone you have crush on.

Here are some cool movie night ideas for you and your family/friends to enjoy.

  • Dress Up – Dressing up as your favorite character can bring some fun and excitement to the event. Say you’re watching a Marvel movie there’s tons of characters you can choose from.
  • Play Flash Cards – If its a movie you’ve seen before make flash cards. Have your guests answer them make a game of it and offer a reward.
  • Make Your House/Location Themed For The Movie/Movies Being Watched That Night

These are just a few im sure I can come up with more and so can you. But you get my drift on ideas hopefully.

Know Your Limits On Movie Night

Know Your Limits On Movie Night
Know Your Limits On Movie Night

Now, this is a get-together and some events can be larger than others. It is very important that you know your limits.

Know your limits on what you can and cannot show. Not everyone likes horror or crime and won’t watch those kinds of movies for whatever reason.

So if you’re going to do a horror or a crime movie knowing this about one or some of your guests. Make sure its a light horror or crime something like a horror/comedy or crime/comedy/buddy. In hopes to offset the attention off the main genre of the movie and keep your guests comfortable at your gathering.

Also, know your limits for alcohol consumption. If you are going to allow drinking on your movie night make sure it isn’t to the point where everyone is sloppy drunk and just talking to one another instead of watching the movie. That’s no longer a movie night event it’s now a bar.

If children are present this could be even more dangerous. So be mindful know your limits.

If You Don’t Know Them Don’t Let Them In

If you are having a movie night event at your place or at a place that you’re in charge of. Check everyone that comes through the door. Now I don’t mean personally pat everyone down and scan them with a metal detector. You can if you’d like but I’m talking more so if you didn’t personally invite them or know them don’t let them into your gathering. You don’t know what they have on them or what their intentions are. We live in a crazy world nowadays and its just better to be safe than sorry honestly.

Movie Nights Are Free For Company – Under Certain Terms

This is another one of those unwritten rules about movie night. But if you’re hosting a movie night event. You should not charge your friends, family members or a date. That’s just something you don’t do. Not cash at least make them pay by bringing a snack or drinks.

Now if your event goes viral or you become like some kind of movie night throwing champion. Then you can charge a fee at the door. Most likely you don’t know these people and your events are larger than a regular get together. So your expenses for food, drinks, lights etc. are going to be more costly than the others. Which is why charging a fee is not a bad idea if you’re on that level.

Now, if you bring your children or if children are at the event and you notice that they have made a mess at your host’s house or place of entertainment. As a good guest, you should offer help to clean up the mess. If the mess was caused by your child/children clean it up without even asking to that’s just apart of parenting.

This is yet again an unwritten rule.

You Must Finish The Movie/Movies To Have A Complete Movie Night

If you and your guests fall asleep through the movie/movies. It does not count and that movie or movies must be rewatched in its/their entirety to be counted.

Once you and your guests complete the movie or movies the movie night is now officially over. This is the time to finish off snacks and grab a real bite to eat before you get in bed.

Thank your host and ride out.

Or Thank your guests and get ready for bed.

These are things that will get you permanently banned from movie nights and get-togethers alike.

  • Stealing – Caught stealing it’s done and over with.
  • Fighting – Who fights at a movie night?
  • Throwing Temper Tantrums – Gotta go
  • Not Cleaning Up Your Mess – Banned
  • Trying To Flirt With Someone Else’s Spouse – Why do this during movie night? Go to a club
  • Yelling At Someone Else’s Children – This could result in a lot more than just a movie night ban. Don’t ever do this in any situation.
  • Not Following Host’s Rules – If the hosts says no smoking in the movie watching area and you light up during the movie. (Banned)
  • Telling Movies – Noone like that person that tells the movie sequence by sequence. Like shut up and eat this ban with a large cup of Bandorade to drink.
  • Talking During The Movie – If you and a friend are just now seeing each other for the first time in a while go to another area and catch up on lost time. Not during the movie.
  • Having The Brightness Up On Your Cellphone – Having that bright light from your phone screen shining in the dark during a movie can take away from the event.

  2. Hi and thanks for this info. I actually never thought this much about a movie night but it does sound like a lot of fun, especially the flash card idea, I really liked that. I think I will host a movie night now and use your ideas and plans that u have here. Thanks again 🙂

    1. Let me know how it turns out.

  3. Movie nights sound like serious business. Haha, though I can attest to the annoyance of having anyone not only talking during the feature but doing play by plays of the film as its going. My nephew performed that faux pas during our annual New Years Day movie day; we watched all extended Lord of the Rings. It was fantastic.

I’ll keep these tips in mind if I ever host a shindig that doesn’t involve family. I’ve never really had an extensive party/movie sort of night and it sounds rather extravagant. A friend and I were plotting a Yuri!!! On Ice themed one complete with pirozhki and katsudon, but we haven’t talked about it in a while so it’s probably a no go.

    Thanks for the tips.

    1. You sound like you know how to have a good time. Thank you for your comment and I wish you and yours the best with future movie nights and gatherings.

  4. Great ideas and suggestions for having a movie night. I now know how to successfully host and make it a great night for all.

  5. Thanks for your post. I personally love a movie night. Now that I’m getting older I’d much rather hang out with my friends with a glass of wine and a funny movie. Somehow comedies seem even more fun when you’re with a great group of people that you want to spend time with.

    1. Yes I totally agree. Nothing better than a good positive vibe going crowd with you to watch a movie!
